Although electrically height adjustable desks have been commonplace in the Scandinavian countries for a long time, it is only in recent years that the UK market has begun to use then to any extent. The drop in price over the last five years has been a factor but so also has been the awareness that the one-size-fits-all approach to desk heights can have severe health repercussions, particularly for taller than average users.
Their use can also be advantageous for wheelchair usesrs and those with other physical disabilities. Current DDA regulations, which relate to disabled workers, have also highlighted the need adequately to cater for this sector of the workforce. The able bodied can also gain significant benefits from the ability to spend periods of time sitting and periods standing at the desk. At the touch of a button you can switch between seated and standing working positions.
A study conducted within the Dutch independent research organisation, TNO, concluded that 85% of their staff preferred attending meetings which were conducted standing up. When a meeting is held standing up, its duration can be cut by one-third while the quality of the decision-making remains unchanged and the same results are reached. Meetings in the Netherlands cost 30 billion euros every year in terms of time. Thus meetings held standing can deliver a potential cost savings of 10 billion euros. In addition, a height-adjustable table has the advantage that the height can be adjusted to suit the group, or the meeting can be held seated at a conventional table height if needed. Too radical for the UK? At least the participants can't nod off.
