Seat Wedges
What they do and how to choose
Seat wedges are shaped foam cushions which are designed to use on office chairs, dining chairs or car seats to open the angle between body and upper leg. Sitting with the legs at 90° or less to the body causes strain in the hip joint. This is relieved by a backward rotation of the pelvis. This in turn flattens out the natural inward curve (lordosis) of the lumbar spine, putting increased pressure on the inner serfaces of the lumbar disks in particular. Wedges can help to reduce this problem by encoraging a more open angle between body and upper leg.
Seat wedges come in a variety of sizes, angles and foam densities. 8° or 9° wedges are the most commonly supplied, particularly for cars and upright chairs. Wedges which are greater than about 9°, particularly on dining or office chairs, tend to make sitting uncomfortable because of the tendency to slide forwards off the seat.
Other seat cushions are available for a variety of purposes, mainly pressure relief. We can supply a selection of cushions of this type with assorted cutouts for specific zones of relief, such as the coccyx, perineum or for post-natal use.
Dimensions given are W (width side to side), D (depth from front to back) and T (maximum thickness at the back of the wedge or the thickness of flat cushions).

The 11° wedge is a slightly steeper version of the 8° wedge above, again with rounded back corners. Suitable for car seats where the seat cushion has sagged, is very steeply inclined back, or for drivers of shorter stature. Very hard wearing velour upholstery in black, grey and some variations.

BRU 9° Wedge

A budget 9° wedge in a zipped, mid blue, stretch polyester cover. A good starter wedge. Not as durable as the Putnam wedges but a good all rounder. The back corners are square but as the cover is zipped, you can always trim the foam to fit better into car seats.
